The Quartz Arcade

Sailor Moon Side Scrolling Game
(Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)

Although most are familiar with the original Sailor Moon beat 'em up on the Super Famicom / Super Nintendo, that game was also released on the Sega Mega Drive / Sega Genesis.  For the most part it's very much cut from the same cloth as the Super Famicom original but it mixes things up just enough to be considered a different game.  I almost consider this title in between the two Super Famicom beat 'em up games in terms of presentation.  Some parts of the game are enhanced over the original while others come up short.  Sometimes the graphics look better with more detail and personality and at other times it looks like a rush job of a conversion.  Not better or worse, this game really is a step to the side when compared to the other original series beat 'em up.  It is still absolutely worth playing just to see what is different, as I said, it's almost like Sailor Moon 1.5 in terms of the console beat 'em ups.  Some stages are reworked, some completely removed with new areas added and boss fights are different.  It's a strange beast indeed.

Selected Screen Shots:

The character selection screen is nearly identical to the Super Famicom version with all five original senshi. This game is an enigma, looking both more and less detailed than the game it is based off of.

Sailor Jupiter takes care of business atop a speeding truck.  This stage should be cool but is rather tedious. Sailor Moon throws youma out of an elevator in the first area where the game diverges from the original.
